Tickets are numbered in the order they are purchased. The signing line will form outside in approximate ticket number order. Attendees will be invited to join the line based on their ticket number. Listening to the talk in the parking lot is free. You do not need a ticket to be in the parking lot.
David Sedaris is witty, engaging and delightful. He enjoys meeting and greeting his fans, and he spends time with each person. He will stay and sign for EVERY attendee. For context, David's events often go late. The last time he was at a bookstore in Duluth he stayed past 1 am, and it was raining! You do not need a ticket to meet Mr. Sedaris. But ticket holders will have first priority in their position in the line.
People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments and enjoy the evening! This will be a FUN night. Local businesses, like Beaner's Coffeeshop and Gannucci's Italian Market, are staying open late. The Rambler food truck and Mrs. Delicious' ice trike will be on site.
There is to be no photography, recording, or video for the entire evening, reading or signing.
David will sign any book, magazine article, or other piece of writing that he has written. Please do not ask the author to sign books written by other people.
David Sedaris returns with his most deeply personal and darkly hilarious book. If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong.
When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself.
With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny - it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's writing has never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.
This is beach reading for people who detest beaches, required reading for those who loathe small talk and love a good tumour joke. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet - and it just might be his very best.
Calypso was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2018, and one of the best books of 2018 by People, NPR “On Point,” Real Simple, San Francisco Chronicle, Garden & Gun, BookPage, Southern Living, USA Today, New York magazine, and Electric Literature.
