Zenith Bookstore is thrilled to welcome best-selling author and renowned humorist David Sedaris to Duluth for a reading and signing, celebrating the release of his latest book Calypso – deeply personal and darkly hilarious – to paperback.

Join us for what promises to be a memorable evening of fun and merriment! The reading takes place at Zenith Bookstore and Mr. Sedaris's talk will be broadcast outside in the parking lot.

If you plan to attend this event, please read the following important information.

We have now sold out of seating and standing room space in the bookstore. We are continuing to sell tickets online for a copy of Calypso and a reserved spot in the signing line. You can also obtain a reserved spot by buying any new book by David Sedaris at Zenith Bookstore.

Tickets are numbered in the order they are purchased. The signing line will form outside in approximate ticket number order. Attendees will be invited to join the line based on their ticket number. Listening to the talk in the parking lot is free. You do not need a ticket to be in the parking lot.

David Sedaris is witty, engaging and delightful. He enjoys meeting and greeting his fans, and he spends time with each person. He will stay and sign for EVERY attendee. For context, David's events often go late. The last time he was at a bookstore in Duluth he stayed past 1 am, and it was raining! You do not need a ticket to meet Mr. Sedaris. But ticket holders will have first priority in their position in the line.

People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and refreshments and enjoy the evening! This will be a FUN night. Local businesses, like Beaner's Coffeeshop and Gannucci's Italian Market, are staying open late. The Rambler food truck and Mrs. Delicious' ice trike will be on site.

There is to be no photography, recording, or video for the entire evening, reading or signing.

David will sign any book, magazine article, or other piece of writing that he has written. Please do not ask the author to sign books written by other people.

  • When will ticket holders receive their copies of the book? You will receive your book when you check in at the event on June 6th.
  • If I don't buy a ticket, when can I join the signing line? Once ticket holders have gotten their books signed, we'll open up the signing line to all. It's unlikely this will happen before 10pm.
  • I can't come. Can I order a signed book? YES! You can do so via our website, or by calling the store at 218-606-1777.
  • I already have a copy of Calypso. Can I still get a ticket for the signing line? Yes. A purchase at Zenith Bookstore of a new copy of any David Sedaris book (see below) will get you a ticket.
  • Is Mr. Sedaris really going to stay and sign books for everyone? YES!

David Sedaris returns with his most deeply personal and darkly hilarious book. If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong.

When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And life at the Sea Section, as he names the vacation home, is exactly as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself.

With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation toward middle age and mortality. Make no mistake: these stories are very, very funny - it's a book that can make you laugh 'til you snort, the way only family can. Sedaris's writing has never been sharper, and his ability to shock readers into laughter unparalleled. But much of the comedy here is born out of that vertiginous moment when your own body betrays you and you realize that the story of your life is made up of more past than future.

This is beach reading for people who detest beaches, required reading for those who loathe small talk and love a good tumour joke. Calypso is simultaneously Sedaris's darkest and warmest book yet - and it just might be his very best.

Calypso was named a New York Times Notable Book of 2018, and one of the best books of 2018 by People, NPR “On Point,” Real Simple, San Francisco Chronicle, Garden & Gun, BookPage, Southern Living, USA Today, New York magazine, and Electric Literature.

He is a regular contributor to The New Yorker and BBC Radio 4. He lives in England.

"The brilliance of David Sedaris’s writing is that his very essence, his aura, seeps through the pages of his books like an intoxicating cloud, mesmerizing us so that his logic becomes ours.”  — Alan Cumming, New York Times Book Review

“Sedaris demonstrates yet again what makes him the best American humorist writing today: A remarkable ability to combine the personal with the political, the mundane with the profane, slime with the sublime, and hilarity with heart.” —

“We’ll follow one of the great humorists of our time wherever he goes.” —Entertainment Weekly
